Volunteering with Animals or in Conservation

When I decided that I wanted to volunteer, I searched all over the web and found a lot of websites offering places to volunteer. I want to share these websites with you! Ok, they're not really organized yet, I'll do that later.......

As a volunteer you must contribute something to the project you work for!!

Don't expect to volunteer for free unless you have a skill to offer or the appropriate education! Volunteers are really expensive for a NGO. The shorter you stay, the more expensive per day it will be! People will have to put time and effort in you to learn you how to do the job. If you are lucky, they'll provide you with room and board. If you want to volunteer longterm expect to pay for your ticket and insurence.

The organization you will work for will prefer local people to do the job. This is good for local economy and for local commitment to the project. Only if there are no resources to hire residents, or if there are no residents to do the job they will rely on volunteers!

Learn a foreign language! If you want to volunteer in South America, learn Spanish or Portugese. Looking for a volunteer position in Francophone Africa? Learn French!!!

Start early with your search. Volunteer positions are filled up quickly!
